On our visit to New York we committed to waking up earlier than normal one morning and made our way to the Union Square Greenmarket Farmers Market.
It was fascinating to see that, while New York is so relatively close, how far ahead their seasons are. Our markets are 3-4 weeks behind the abundance they are offering – which was all the more reason to get excited about the onset of Spring. We enjoyed our first Asparagus in almost a year in New York a full 3 weeks before it become available in Toronto. Presumably we’ll have it a few weeks longer (all things being equal) so it’s a best of both worlds this year!
The Union Square Market happens Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 08:00AM – 6:00PM every day through the year. It was a massive market with a tonne of booths – here’s a peak:
