The end of the month of October brought two things together – Home Ec and Halloween!
We had a smaller turnout than expected due to Hurricane Sandy’s wind and rain (though the effects in Toronto were obviously incredibly different from the intensity she hit our neighbors to the south). There were still 20 or 30 people who showed up (some in costume and others, like us, without) in great humor with incredible home-made treats to celebrate the spooky night.
We, once again, were fortunate to have the amazing Margaret Mulligan as our visual historian. Margaret took photos of the entire event and captured the spirit of Home Ec – a bunch of people (strangers and friends alike) gathered together in the spirit of sharing.
It was the second time this year that my dish didn’t work out the way I planned. I had intended to make apple cider/ maple syrup salted caramel but the mysterious abduction of my candy thermometer changed my results to caramel sauce. Home Ec is more about effort than results so I brought our ‘defective’ caramel and turned it into a dip for apples and pears (the leftovers became an amazing apple caramel crumble!)
Stay tuned tomorrow for the unveiling of the next theme – it’s going to be frantic!
